The Virgin of Light
Less than 10 kilometers from Tarifa, in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, in the Dehesa de las Caheruelas, is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Light, patron saint of Tarifa.
According to legend, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Light was ordered to be built.owed by Alfonso XI to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Salado in the 16th century, but it was razed to the ground by Napoleonic troops and had to be rebuilt in the 19th century.
In the church of this Sanctuary, there is the image of the Virgen de la Luz, which dates from the 17th century. The image of María Santísima de la Luz represents the Virgin Mary standing holding in her left arm the image of the Child Jesus, who holds a scepter with her right hand and the world globe with her left hand, symbolizing her royalty and merciful power.
